What Is Access Control List and How to Configure It

What Is ACL (Access Control List) and How to Configure It

FS Official Aug 14, 2018

An ACL (access control list) is like a filter in networking which is often utilized by Ethernet switches or routers. ACL specifies which users or system processes are granted access to the network. When an ACL is configured on an Ethernet interface, data passing through the interface will be allowed or denied according to the set ACL rules. That’s why ACL (access control list) can help network developers secure their networks.

Compared with a firewall which is complex and provides in-depth protection for networks, access control list offers a basic level of security for networks. But it can provide protection on higher speed interfaces where firewall maybe restrictive. Usually, there are different ACL types like standard ACL and extended ACL. Different types of ACL take on different function in networking.

ACL configuration is not an easy task. This video explains what is ACL in a simple way, and gives an example of how to configuring ACL using FS S5850-32S2Q 10G SFP+ switch in details. FS S5850-32S2Q 10G leaf switch not only supports ACL but also support functions like MLAG, VLAN, IP routing, MSTP, etc. And it comes with 32 10G SFP+ ports and 2 40G QSFP+ ports, which enable it to work as a core or aggregation switch in different size networks. Get more information about ACL configuration in this video.
