How to Use Visual Fault Locator (VFL) to Find Breaks in Fiber Cable?

How to Use Visual Fault Locator (VFL) to Find Breaks in Fiber Cable?

FS Official Jun 4, 2018

Visual fault locator (VFL) is a pen-type fiber optic cable tester. It can be used to trace the continuity of the optical fibers and find faults such as breaks, bad splices and tight and sharp bends in them by injecting the red light into fiber cables. Only with two batteries loaded, you can make a visual fault locator work.

Its working mode is very simple. Take fiber cables with SC connector and LC connector as an example. Connect the connector with the adapter in visual fault locator. If the red light escapes through the cable jacket, it means there is a break. If no breaks appear, it means the fiber cable is undamaged.

FS can offer a wide range of visual fault locators with various output powers and testing distances for choosing to support SC, FC, ST, LC and MU connectors. As for the fiber optical adapter, FS provides 2.5 mm and 1.25 mm diameter sizes for you. If you also want to measure fiber cable’s optical power and relative loss, you also can find tools, like handheld fiber optical light source and optical power meter in FS for help.
