Overview

As an important administrative agency of the local government, the client was responsible for formulating and implementing public policies covering urban planning, social welfare, cultural protection, environmental sustainability, etc., aiming to promote economic development and achieve the goal of smart city construction. As a popular tourist destination, the area needed to build a wide-coverage, stable and secure Wi-Fi network to support smart city strategies and modern urban services.

To meet the network needs within the office, the network needed to be upgraded to 25G to achieve comprehensive and stable wireless coverage. The network should support a variety of scenarios such as efficient office, file transfer, and video conferencing, while ensuring that the network capacity and performance meet the needs of high-density device access. The terminal could access servers, storage devices and wireless APs, and within the budget, the centralized network management platform supported rapid configuration and unified management.

Challenges

In the old office, network congestion and delays occurred in high-density areas like conference rooms and workspaces due to many employees connecting to Wi-Fi simultaneously. After relocating, employees wanted the new network to provide stable, smooth connections across all areas with seamless connectivity, avoiding performance drops from AP switching.

To effectively manage the new network, technicians needed a centralized management platform to view network status in real-time and quickly resolve issues. Timely troubleshooting would minimize downtime, improve network reliability and employee efficiency.

The old network lacked support for features such as MLAG and private VLANs. The new network was expected to include some of these features. Additionally, the client's technicians required 25Gbps, back-to-front airflow for the core switches, and multi-gigabit PoE front-to-back airflow for the access switches.

With a limited budget, the client needed to balance performance and maintenance costs, selecting cost-effective equipment. The network also needed good scalability to easily add APs or bandwidth later, ensuring future growth needs could be met.

Solutions

To meet the needs of government Wi-Fi projects, FS provided a complete set of network topology design solutions to ensure that the network can maintain efficient operation even in high-traffic and high-density environments.

The Wi-Fi 6E AP-N635 leverages the 6GHz band to provide higher bandwidth and less interference compared to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands used by traditional Wi-Fi 6 devices. This allows for higher data transfer rates and more efficient use of network resources, ensuring that government agencies can handle large amounts of data and support a higher number of devices without experiencing congestion.

For high-speed transmission of AP-N635, FS provided a variety of 48-port PoE switches as options. The S5870-48MX6BC-U provides 48 multi-gigabit PoE++ ports and 6 100G uplinks, suitable for large-scale Wi-Fi 6/6E networks. The S5810-48TS-P PicOS® switch is very suitable for medium-sized networks that support static routing, VLAN and QoS. The S5860-48XMG-U can power high-demand devices and provide advanced L2/L3, QoS and ACL functions to handle complex network needs.

In response to the government Wi-Fi demand for multiple services and advanced features, the N8550-48B8C PicOS® core switches were adopted. The switch supports MLAG, which can achieve device-level redundancy and ensure high network availability. In addition, the core layer and access layer devices are managed through the network management platform, achieving unified and efficient management.

In the end, considering the actual budget and delivery requirements, the client's technical team selected 20pcs WiFi 6E APs, and the N8550-48B8C and S5860-48XMG-U were selected for the core and access layers, respectively. These devices achieved a good balance between performance and price, meeting the government's needs for network stability and efficient management.
