Background

Online learning and remote learning are getting more and more popular, and various types of media and network devices are connected to the campus network. Thus resulting in an explosion in the amount of data transferred between campus networks and a severe lack of bandwidth for sharing resources between schools. One of FS’s clients was facing such a dilemma and needed to upgrade the network bandwidth among three senior high schools and their public library so that the three senior high schools in the region and public libraries can share teaching resources without barriers.

Challenge

The distance between the public library and three senior high schools was 70km to 120km. These schools wanted to connect with the public library so that students in each senior high school could share teaching resources and access to the library resources simultaneously.

The digital revolution had brought amazing innovations to education, but schools could struggle to cope with the explosive and continual increase in bandwidth requirements. And the new network had to connect about four senior schools and several primary schools over a large geographical area. How to build a stable link with a limited budget was a key problem.

For the clients, they had no professional IT administrators to operate and maintain the network system or devices, which would make the later O&M process harder and slower.

Solution

Four 10G S5850-48S6Q leaf switches were centered in the master control machine room of three senior high schools and a public library respectively. They were used for handling all traffic from the access layer and providing uplinks to the core layer. All these network switches offered high-density server connectivity and favorable scalability to make a preparation for the next generation networking upgrading.

We put the 40CH C21-C60 dual fiber DWDM Mux Demux in each site and 25 channels of them were used for achieving the 10Gbps transmission among High School 1, 2, 3, and district office & primary data center. The rest 15 channels of DWDM Mux Demux were reserved for the network expansion in the future.

The whole network system was designed as a ring topology in order to keep a smooth and uninterrupted link transmission as a whole. When one of the links failed and the network would start to use the backup lines for data transmission to ensure network continuity.

Additionally, the 10G transponder (OEO) could offer five independent transponders operating from 100M to 11.1G line rates and enable for high capacity needs. It could repeat the optical signals to realize long-distance transmission.

Support multiple services transmission: this solution deployed the FS M6200 multi-service WDM platform, which could support Ethernet, FC, SDH, OTN, SDN storage service, etc., and enable transmission transparency, making a stable and high-performance DWDM network. Even if the education media devices are upgraded in the future, this solution can still suit the demands for various transmission services.

Simple operation & maintenance: the M6200 series multi-service WDM platform provided a unified NMS management system and all services cards were visible in the unified management software. Real-time remote monitoring and link failure alarming were supported, too. Thus having few skills requirements for IT administrators and reducing the maintenance difficulty and increasing the availability of the overall architecture.

Easy for future network expansion: 25 channels of the 40CH DWDM Mux Demux have been used for data transmission and prepared 15 redundant channels for future bandwidth upgrading.
