This is possible, but you need to check if your Procurve Switch has an SFP Module, then if it's compatible please check if the Procurve Switch SFP Module is compatible with a single-mode patch cable.

Yes, the duplex SC connectors can be split apart easily. You do not need any tool for sure. The plastic clip can be disassembled, so the two SC connectors can be separated for your use case.
