Fiber Media Converter

What Is Ethernet Media Converter and How to Use It?

FS Official Jul 6, 2018

Ethernet media converter, also called fiber media converter, is a device with two media-dependent interfaces and a power supply. It can be used to connect two dissimilar media types such as copper cables with fiber optic cables. In most cases, the fiber media converters are used to solve the integration of the newer technology in higher performance with the older equipment, usually the fiber-to-copper conversion.

In this video, the four commonly used applications of Ethernet media converters will be introduced as references for you. Besides, to have a visual idea about how the fiber media converters work, we take the mini RJ45 to SFP media converter as a case to demonstrate it. Notably, the Ethernet media converter is usually applied in pairs. To realize the conversion, you need to have two switches or one switch combining with the terminal equipment, fiber optic cables, Ethernet cables, and suitable transceiver modules being prepared in advance. For more details about the operation, you can watch this video.

Looking for the Ethernet media converters, you can visit FS for more details. Four types of the media converters with different configurations are all available: unmanaged media converter, managed media converter, mini media converters, and PoE media converters. By the way, their matching devices are also accessible at here, such as Ethernet switches, SFP transceiver modules, and terminal devices, like IP camera.
