The difference between 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 1310nm 10km and 100GBASE-LR QSFP28 Single Lambda 1310nm 10km is in hardware. The modulation mode of 100GBASE-LR QSFP28 Single Lambda is PAM4, while the modulation mode of 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 is non-return-to-zero code (NRZ) modulation. We have two campuses about 5km apart from each other. Our devices are Cisco NCS-5501 switches. So we ordered the new 100G LR4 modules with 10km transmission to connect the switches. When we received the products, they were protected in the hard plastic box. Installed on our switches, they worked as expected.

We wanted to buy 100G modules for our Juniper switch. We had a clear specification for new modules, 10km max. transmission, LC duplex connector, λ1296-1309 nm. We found that 100G-LR module #97851 may meet our specification and asked the sales whether it was OK for our device. The sales asked our network environment in detail and then recommended another one 100G-LR4 #48355. He told us that, 100G-LR used PAM4, more suitable for 5G. And the equipment we decided to connect to the Juniper switch didn’t support PAM4. To ensure compatibility, we also asked FS to sent us 100G-LR4 module testing report. Finally, we bought #48355. We received the products on time. They run nice on our switch, 10/10 recommend.
