Highlights

  • The initial network system, SONiC NOS, was migrated to FS PicOS® and successfully installed on the client's 10G switches.

  • PicOS® main functions include MLAG, EVPN-VXLAN, Ansible, ACL, API, LLDP, Voice VLAN, RADIUS, and TACACS+, among others.

Key Stats

  • Implementing PicOS® in the network significantly improved the efficiency of video transmission for endoscope devices.

  • PicOS® seamlessly integrated with existing Edgecore hardware, simplifying network management.

  • PicOS-V local testing and FS's support ensured smooth implementation and reliable operations.

Overview

FS's client is a leading international medical technology company specializing in endoscopes and minimally invasive surgical devices. With thousands of employees and a broad product range, they are dedicated to advancing healthcare through innovative solutions, precise craftsmanship, and exceptional clinical outcomes. However, their existing network infrastructure was not meeting their advanced needs, prompting them to seek a more robust and compatible solution.

Challenges

The client initially relied on SONiC NOS to meet their network needs, but it proved to be insufficient, lacking the essential switch functionalities required to support the high video bandwidth demands of their endoscopy equipment. They needed a robust network solution capable of handling the substantial bandwidth requirements for their endoscopic video streams. Moreover, the new solution had to seamlessly integrate with their existing network hardware supplied by Edgecore to ensure stable operation in real-world applications.

Solutions

The client reached out to FS, recognizing that it offers an advanced Network Operating System (NOS) known as PicOS®, which is a more resilient and cost-effective alternative to SONiC NOS and can seamlessly integrate with their existing hardware vendor. PicOS® supports L2/L3 switching and routing functions, as well as OpenFlow 1.4, and includes a comprehensive set of features such as MLAG, EVPN-VXLAN, Ansible, ACL, API, LLDP, Voice VLAN, RADIUS, and TACACS+. It was installed on the client's 10G switches to be used with each of their endoscope machines, enabling the viewing and analysis of video from these devices.

Starting with a pilot project, FS provided the client access to PicOS-V and a local test license. This allowed them to preview and test all features of PicOS® for free, ensuring compatibility and performance. Subsequently, the FS team assisted in configuring and extensively testing the system within their internal network and real-world scenarios. Given that each device required only one switch, the network management demands were not overly complex. Configuration was carried out as each device was deployed, followed by connection to the hospital or office network. Throughout the process, FS worked closely with the client, offering continuous support to ensure a smooth implementation.

Results

FS PicOS® solution successfully addressed the client's endoscope device video transmission issues and provided a straightforward network management scheme, significantly improving their operational efficiency. Additionally, FS's exceptional support team ensured that the client received timely and effective assistance throughout the process, enabling them to uphold their commitment to their customers and reinforce their position as a leader in medical technology.
