Our client, one of the largest hospital systems in the United States, aims to modernize its network infrastructure to meet the growing demand for healthcare services. As a system with numerous hospitals, many acquired through merger and acquisition activities, the hospital system faces challenges in maintaining a consistent and efficient network across all locations. Their primary goal is to optimize network management efficiency and ensure quick and seamless switch replacements without compromising on quality or reliability.
The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) has expressed a keen interest in transitioning to an open network system to simplify and streamline network management. In his words, he envisions making the process of changing network switches "as easy as changing a roll of toilet paper."
The Current network system was not only costly, particularly with the expenses tied to Cisco hardware, but it also suffered from supply chain issues that made replacing and maintaining network equipment incredibly complex. In a healthcare environment, network reliability is critical, and any delays or issues can result in substantial losses. Our client urgently needed a more open and flexible network solution that could simplify the process of replacing and managing switches while reducing costs and improving efficiency. However, previous Sonic solutions the client explored fell short due to its open-source nature and dependency on specific hardware, which didn't fully meet their needs.
To address these challenges, FS deployed PicOS®, an open networking operating system compatible with various hardware options. This flexibility enabled our client to choose cost-effective switches that met their performance needs, reducing overall expenses. The real game-changer, however, was FS’s AmpCon™ platform, which automated network switch deployment through Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP). With centralized AmpCon™ management platform, new switches could be configured and brought online automatically, eliminating the need for on-site technical expertise and significantly speeding up the process—crucial in a healthcare setting where network reliability is vital.
Throughout the implementation, FS collaborated closely with their IT team, setting up a testing environment in PicOS-V to replicate their network and ensure the solution met all requirements. FS provided hands-on support, training, and documentation, empowering our client’s team to manage the new system independently.
With the PicOS® Networking Management solution, our client gained the flexibility to adapt to changing needs, experienced reduced costs, and saw improved operational efficiency. FS PicOS® solution not only simplified network management processes and reduced hardware procurement and operational costs but also significantly improved network availability and reliability, which directly supported our client's goal of maintaining a reliable, high-quality network to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
