Explore PicOS 4.4.5: What’s New and Noteworthy
PicOS® 4.4.5 comes with a suite of powerful new features to solve common network challenges. Among these innovations are enhanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 capabilities, as well as features designed to improve network security and efficiency.

IS-IS Protocol Support
PicOS® 4.4.5 introduces support for the IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) protocol, a key update for networks needing advanced Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) capabilities. By employing the Shortest Path First (SPF) algorithm, IS-IS helps optimize routing decisions and improve overall network efficiency.
OSPFv2/OSPFv3 Graceful Restart (GR)
With support for OSPF Graceful Restart, routers can now continue forwarding traffic during an OSPF protocol restart or primary-backup switchovers without service disruption. This feature ensures that networks remain resilient and reliable during maintenance or unexpected events.
IPv6 Security Enhancements
PicOS® 4.4.5 introduces three major security updates for IPv6 traffic management:
IPv6 Source Guard filters out malicious or unauthorized IPv6 traffic by verifying the legitimacy of source addresses against a binding table.
IPv6 DHCP Guard blocks unauthorized DHCPv6 messages, ensuring that clients only receive IP addresses and other configurations from trusted DHCP servers.
IPv6 DHCP Snooping establishes a DHCPv6 binding table to prevent rogue DHCP servers from distributing incorrect information, adding another layer of security to the network.
PFC Watchdog
To prevent PFC (Priority-based Flow Control) deadlocks that can halt traffic, PicOS® 4.4.5 includes the PFC Watchdog, which detects and automatically resolves these issues, ensuring traffic flows smoothly even during network anomalies.
ECMP Hash Enhancement
For more efficient traffic distribution, the new ECMP (Equal-Cost Multi-Path) hash enhancement offers flexible load-balancing modes, including Randomized, Round-Robin, and Dynamic Load Balancing, allowing networks to distribute traffic more effectively across multiple paths.
