How to Assign IP Addresses to Cisco Switches?

As it is not common to equip each switch with a computer to configure it, it can waste time to repeatedly link your computer to multiple Ethernet switches with one console cable during networking. However, by assigning an IP address to each switch, it is easy to control switches in the same network, avoiding the manual connection once and for all.

In this example, we’ll use two Cisco switches (Cisco 2960-X, Cisco 4948E-F) and one FS S5850-32S2Q 32-Port 10GE SFP+ L2/L3 Data Centre Leaf Switch with 2 40G QSFP+ to demonstrate how to assign IP addresses to switches and how to make use of the IP addresses for not-in place management. A series of CLI commands are used to achieve the configuration. Specific steps include assigning IP address to switch, setting the trunk port, adding trunk port to VLAN, etc. When a trunk link is established, all of the configured VLANs are allowed to send and receive traffic across the link.
