Unique Connections for Arista 7150S Series Switches

Posted on by FS.COM

As the demand for networking environments like financial trading systems, high performance computing (HPC) clusters, virtualized large-scale data centers and cloud hosting and application platforms, network devices which can meet high performance, topological and analytical needs are required. And the Arista 7150S switch is the solution. This article will describe the Arista 7150S series switches and the unique connections.

Arista7150S Switch Overview

The 1 RU Arista 7150s series switch is optimized for ultra low latency, cut-through forwarding. It’s designed to suit the critical environments such as ultra low latency financial ECNs (electronic communication networks), HPC clusters and data centers. The Arista 7150s series include three models: 7150S-24, 7150S-52, 7150S-64. Each model supports wire-speed performance at both layer 2 and layer 3. Both 7150S-24 and 7150S-52 support SFP+ on all ports. The 7150S-64 has 48 SFP+ and 4 QSFP+ ports. The SFP+ ports can support 1G and 10G operation and also 100Mb support with 100/1000-TX transceivers. The QSFP+ ports can support 40GbE and 4x10GbE modes.

Note: AgilePorts is a unique feature of the 7150S series. It means that users can configure adjacent blocks of 4xSFP+ interfaces as a single 40GbE link. The 7150S-24 switch can provide 4x40G and 8x10G (using 16 SFP+ for 4x40G and 8 SFP+ for 8x10G) network solution. The 7150S-52 switch allows up to 13x 40G (all 52 SFP+ ports grouped into 40G ports) and the 7150S-64 switch can provide 16x40G interfaces including 4 QSFP+ ports and 12x40G ports (48 SFP+ ports grouped into 12x40G) (see the following picture).

Optics and Cables Supported for Arista 7150S Switch

The SFP+ ports accommodate a full range of 10GbE SFP+ and 1GbE SFP transceivers such as 10GBASE-CR, 10GBASE-SR, 10GBASE-LRL, etc. A wide range of cables from short reach copper and multi-mode fiber, to single-mode fiber are available to support the transmission distance up to 40 km and DWDM solutions up to 80 km. The SFP options include multi-mode and single-mode fiber transceivers, and both 100Mb and 1Gb over copper cabling. For the QSFP+ ports (This is only for 7150S-64 switch), there are also many optics choices including 40GBASE-CR4, 40GBASE-SR4, 40G-PLRL4, 40GBASE-LR4, 40G QSFP+ to QSFP+ active optical cable. The distances can be supported from 100 m over OM3 to 10 km over single-mode fiber.

10G to 40G Connection

At the mention of the migration from 10G to 40G network, usually 40G transceiver is thought as an indispensable part if you use other kinds of switches. Like in the following figure, an MPO/MTP LGX cassette connects four 10G SFP+ links. And then a Type-B female MPO/MTP trunk cable is used to connect the cassette and 40G QSFP+ Transceiver.

40G-solutions

However, 40G QSFP+ transceiver is not needed when you use the 7150S switch. Just as mentioned before, the Arista 7150S switch’s AgilePorts which is designed to address device and cabling life cycles, can upgrade from 10GbE to 40GbE only with just 10G SFP+ transceivers and cables and provide maximum port flexibility and a seamless migration (see the following picture). 40G connection is achieved by connecting four 10GBASE-SR SFP+ transceivers with LC duplex fiber patch cables.

Conclusion

The Arista 7150S is the family of low-latency 1/10/40Gb Ethernet switches. And those switches have the special AgilePorts which means 4xSFP+ interfaces can be configured as a single 40GbE link. That’s very useful to the network data rate migration from 10G to 40G. If you prefer to use common 40G switches, you can refer to FS.COM solution for 40G cabling connection. Or if you favor Arista 7150s series switch with AgilePorts, you can choose Arista compatible 10G SFP+ transceivers, cables and other components from FS.COM.
