Extreme X770 Series Switches Overview

The X770 series switches are purpose-built top-of-rack switches designed to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet-enabled servers and emerging 40 Gigabit Ethernet-enabled servers in enterprise and cloud data centers. X770 helps optimize new server deployments by supporting 40GbE ports or using breakout cables and/or fiber to support 10GbE ports to start the transition to the new virtualized environment. X770 switch supports up to 104 ports of 10GbE in one system and 816 ports of 10GbE in a stacked system using high-speed SummitStack.

In addition, X770 series provides high density Layer 2/3 switching to enable enterprise aggregation and core backbone deployment in AC-powered and DC-powered environments as well as Front-to-Back and Back-to-Front airflow models.

Extreme X770 Configuration Analysis

Extreme X770 model provides 32 x 40 GbE QSFP+ ports, these 40 GbE ports can be configured as a 40 GbE port or as four 10 GbE ports, with 24 of the 32 QSFP+ ports can be broken into 4 ports of 10GbE. The remaining 8 ports of QSFP+ can also be converted into a single port of 10GbE giving a maximum of 104 ports of 10GbE connections in a 1 RU device. The X770 is capable of Layer 2 and Layer 3 forwarding at up to 1904 million packets per second forwarding rate.

Stacking Methods for Extreme X770 Series Switches

Serving as a stackable switch solution, Extreme X770 series supports three types of stacking methods: SummitStack-320, SummitStack-160, and SummitStack-V.

SummitStack-320: uses 4 ports of QSFP+ 40GbE providing 320 Gbps of stacking bandwidth in a stacked ring architecture full duplex.

SummitStack-160: uses 2 ports of QSFP+ 40GbE resulting in 160 Gbps of stacking bandwidth.

SummitStack-V: uses 2 ports of 10GbE, created from converting 2 ports of QSFP+ 40GbE into 2 ports of 10GbE connections, creating 40 Gbps of stacking bandwidth.

Connectivity Solutions for Extreme X770 Series Switches

Accommodating 32 x 40 GbE QSFP+ ports, which can break out into four 10 GbE SFP+ ports, X770 switches offer the flexibility to support any mix or match of up to 104 10GbE and up to 32 40GbE interfaces. This allows you to configure your network with 8 ports of 40GbE and 96 ports of 10GbE, or with 16 ports of 40GbE and 64 ports of 10GbE. Thus, QSFP+ AOC/DAC, QSFP+ transceivers, SFP+ AOC, SFP+ transceivers as well as fan-out optical cables can be supported on X770 switches.
