The higher and higher fiber optic cabling density of the data center is largely depended on the using of racks and fiber optic enclosures which can provide easy-to-manage cabling environments and strong protection for fiber optic cables. The proper use of racks and fiber enclosures can maximize the work efficiency and minimize the downtime risks of networks. There is a large selection of racks and enclosures provided by today’s vendors. Which rack and enclosure should be chosen for your data center? How to make full use of them? This post will offer the details.
Data center racks, or IT racks, can be simply understood as open frames for neatly stack equipment and cable management. However, with the increasing requirement for higher capacity, data center racks are asked to support more functions, and have come to play an important role in the cabling structure of the data centers. Thus, data center racks of various designs are being provided to meet various requirements.
The most popular standard data center racks have a width of 19 inches and a height of 42U (73.5 inches high). However, racks provided by different manufacturers might have different external dimensions. The above picture shows the IT racks loaded with switches and fiber enclosures in FS.COM Test Center. The following pictures shows three typical used standard data center racks.

However, the devices in data centers come in a variety of dimensions, appropriate racks or customized racks might also be needed. Except the size of the devices installed on the racks, there are many other factors should be considered during the selection of the data center racks. Here listed part of them:
Another important component that is necessary for data center cabling is fiber optic enclosure (fiber enclosure). Generally, fiber enclosures are usually used industry standard 19-inch unit design, which can be perfectly installed on the standards data center racks. Customer can also customize fiber enclosures according to their applications in FS.COM.
Fiber enclosure has various designs and sizes. The applications of the fiber enclosures are flexible. There are mainly three ways to use the fiber enclosures, which are depended on the accessories that are installed on the fiber enclosure. The following will take a slide-out 1U rack mount fiber enclosure (shown in the above picture) provided in FS.COM as example to illustrate the applications of the fiber enclosures in data center. Installed with splice trays, spools and MTP cassettes separately, fiber enclosure can provide cabling environment for different connections.
|Application 1: Installing splice tray and FAPs
Installing four fiber adapter panels on the front panel and one or more splicing trays inside the enclosure drawer. This fiber enclosure can provide cable management and protection for splicing joints and connections.
|Application 2: Installing Spools and FAPs
Installing two spools on the enclosure drawer and four FAPs on the front panel, this fiber enclosure can provide flexible high density cabling for fiber patch cables.
|Application 3: Installing HD MTP Cassettes
Up to four MTP Cassettes can be installed in this 1U fiber enclosure, which can provide 40G/100G to 10G high cabling density and easy transferring from MTP interface to LC interface.
Selecting the right racks, fiber enclosure and related accessories can largely increase the cabling efficiency and enjoy a more reliable cabling environment in data centers.
